Freezer Cooking Day!

I had my first freezer cooking day in the new house yesterday and it went pretty smooth aside from the part where I had to run to the store for more tortillas, peanut butter and brown sugar!

Here's the room where I spent my entire day (or at least what felt like it...)

I spent about 6 hours cooking; the first 4 flew by, but a couple friends briefly stopped by and it was about that time I started running out of steam (and my feet were starting to hurt), but I managed to get everything done that I planned on doing plus 1 extra meal - here's what I made:

2 dinners worth w/ leftovers for lunch of homemade Macaroni & Cheese
2 dinners worth Chicken Tetrazinni
25 breakfast burritos (egg, hash browns, little bit of bacon pieces, and shredded leftover turkey)
8 dinners worth of mashed potatoes
homemade Bacon Ranch Pasta salad (ended up eating some for dinner)
homemade maple syrup
cookies
cinnamon rolls
big batch of Granola Bars
2 dinners worth of Southwest Roll-ups

I have had many baking days before, but this one officially wiped me out! This has been the largest of them all by far, but I will most likely continue to have these big cooking days if it continues to save time during the month.

I was doing really well with washing all the dishes as I used them, but somewhere near the end things started getting too hectic and I ended up with a pretty big pile of dishes to take care of (I forgot to take a picture before I cleaned up). I already knew this was hard work, but too much time must have gone by since the last one because this one felt like running a marathon!

Have you tried batch cooking? What were your experiences?

California Kitchen Pizza Review

I received a coupon for a free California Kitchen Pizza a couple weeks ago in the mail, but I wasn't able to use it until a couple days ago because it was only redeemable at Whole Foods. I finally made it out there and found where the pizza was in the store and ended up buying 2 pizzas because these pizzas are smaller than the average full size frozen pizza. (1 was free, the other was $2 off). The cashier happily packed my bag with ice and sent me on my way.

Once I got home, I unpacked the pizzas and was actually able to fit both onto a large cookie sheet (the instructions say to place directly onto the rack), they smelled wonderful! I cooked them for the indicated amount of time and let them cool, cut and served them. My love and I both had some of each pizza and we really liked both of them. They tasted very fresh, but different than any other pizza we've had.

We tried the Pesto Chicken and Oven Roasted Tomatoes and the Tomato, Basil & Mozzarella flavors. I liked the Pesto Chicken pizza better and my love liked the Tomato, Basil and Mozzarella pizza better. The one thing I thought was strange was that these 2 flavors did not have traditional pizza sauce on them, even though, they still tasted great.

The pizza retail for $6.99 at Whole Foods and are smaller than a regular pizza, even though they taste delicious, I probably wouldn't buy these again because they are pretty pricey for the size. I can make a larger pizza with fresh ingredients for less than what it costs to buy these.

Have you tried California Kitchen Pizza? What do you think of it?

I recently was able to try a California Kitchen Pizza free of charge from being a member of Kraft First Taste. The following is a review based solely on the opinions of Nick and I. We were not paid to write this review.

Coupon Organization Methods: Part 4 of 4 & A Giveaway!

The Coupon Box - this is the method I have settled on, and I'm pretty sure I am going to stick with it for a long time! I use envelopes with a card sticking up on top all inside a wicker basket lined with fabric. Since I cut out most of the coupons I get, I have a pretty extensive list of categories for my envelopes. All I do is cut the coupons out once a week and file them, if I see something I will most likely use, I put it in the envelope for the store I plan to use it at, and write it on my list. During the week when I am doing coupon listings on the blog, I will print out some of the ones I think I can use and file them either in the correct envelope to use later or right into the store envelope if I know what the regular or sale price is.

Some of the advantages about this method are: the box is small enough that you could take it with you to the store if you wanted, without being heavy or extremely bulky. All of the coupons are organized by how broad or specific you make the categories. Since you are clipping the coupons, you should have a general idea of what you have. You can usually use what you already have lying around your house to make one of these boxes (or for very cheaply buy a basket and envelopes at the dollar store, along with your newspapers for the week).

The only drawbacks I have about this system is that: if my basket tipped over, I would have a bunch of envelopes all over the floor, and you can only stuff so many coupons into an envelope before you start to tear it.

If you would like to see and/or use the tabs I made for my box, click here

The above picture is my coupon box, and I want to end this series of Coupon Organization with a giveaway! One reader will win a fully made coupon box, pictured below, like mine (I will customize the tabs to suit the grocery stores around you)!

The giveaway will be open until 11:59:59pm CST on December 10th 2009. The winner will be announced on December 11th, 2009.

How to enter:
1. Leave a comment telling me what your current method of coupon organization is
2. Subscribe to the RSS Feed
3. Blog about this giveaway, and give the URL to the page where you blogged about it

The winner will be notified via email and have 48 hours to respond with their mailing address or a new winner will be chosen. The winner will randomly be selected from all eligible entries using Random.org. Each person is allowed up to 3 entries into the giveaway, any additional or duplicate entries will be deleted.

Coupon Organization Methods: Part 3 of 4

Monday, November 23, 2009

If you missed the previous parts of the series click on over to see part 1 and part 2

The Couponizer - This is a great coupon organizing system to use to help you from sorting them to holding them. I used this system for quite some time and I loved it! You are probably wondering why I stopped using it then….? Well, I just have too many coupons for it to hold! The system worked beautifully, I would sit down and quickly cut my coupons out and place them on the CoupStacker, then when I was done I could just transfer each pile from the Stacker to the corresponding pocket of the organizer. Before I would go shopping I would make sure my loyalty cards were in the front plastic card holders and slide it all in its carrying case and head off to the store!

During my shopping trips, I used the front 2 pockets for my "plan to use" coupons and then once I actually put the item in my basket I would move the coupon over to the "use at checkout" pocket. This worked well for me since I usually will look at prices of items I have high value coupons for (I consider $1 or more to be a high value coupon) and if it is something I have room for in the budget to buy, I will, otherwise I leave the coupon in the "plan to use" pocket and once I got home, re-filed it into its correct category.

There were only a couple negative things about this system: if you cut out tons of coupons, you will likely over fill the organizer to the point it might not shut anymore, and once you get to that point of having too many coupons, you realize that there are not enough sub-categories to quickly find your coupons anymore.

Aside from those 2 reasons, I would definitely recommend this product to every beginner and even those of you who use the File System (after you cut them out, put them in the Couponizer, even keep a few "maybe I can use these" coupons in there too so you don't miss the unadvertised sale on those new items you've been wanting to try!

If you would like to find out more information about the Couponizer, or if you are interested in ordering one for yourself or as a gift click here or use the button on the left side bar.

Super Savings Saturday

Saturday, November 21, 2009

See that sneak peek of my new kitchen?
You should be able to click to enlarge the picture, sorry you can't see everything very well.

Oh how I have missed Kroger! Everything pictured below was just under $71! I accomplished this Wednesday night in 2 transactions, about an hour in the store and tons of coupons (the coupons were from multiple sources: some from the paper, some were internet printables, a few were pre-loaded to my Kroger card, some were sent to me from Kroger in the mail, there was a $15 Butterball Turkey coupon I got from being one of the 1st 100 people to leave a comment on a Better Homes and Gardens post and the Always Infiniti coupon came inside a sample I signed up for, whew).

I don't show pictures like these to brag, but rather to inspire you to see how far your money can go! There is quite a bit of processed food in the picture, but let me assure you that this is not the only thing we will be eating this week. I try to make a pretty healthy and varied menu plan for every week.

We try to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, and high quality dairy. We do not buy all organic, but we do not buy any genetically modified food. I make most of our meals from scratch, and use mostly whole wheat flour, substitute applesauce for oil, etc.

Also, while I do not like to buy bottled water, we do not have another source of clean water (I don't trust tap water for drinking). We are saving up for a Berkey Light water filter system. Though it is expensive up front, over the long run it will pay for itself many times over. Until then, we will continue to buy bottled water.

One last thing, our weekly grocery budget is not normally this high, but we just moved and needed quite a bit of stuff, and the nearest Kroger is pretty far from here, so hopefully I can get by without going to the store next week (there are closer stores, but they are considerably more expensive).

Here's what I bought:
1 case of bottled water
4 boxes of Ronzoni Smart Taste Pasta
4 bags of Ronzoni Healthy Harvest Pasta
3 white onions
1 bag of apples
2 small cans of Grand's Biscuits
2 small cans of Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls
2 small cans of Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
2 rolls of Pillsbury refrigerated cookie dough
2 packages of Pillsbury Simply Cookies
13 bags of Kroger brand veggies
1 32 load bottle of All Free and Clear
2 bags of chips
1 Betty Crocker Icing
2 packages of lunch meat
2 packages of Sargento Cheese
1 bag of shredded cheese
2 packages of Pilgrims Pride chicken
1 bottle honey
1 pouch of Bumble Bee tuna
2 packages of Hormel pepperoni
2 boxes of Cinnabon bars
2 pouches of Betty Crocker Potatoes
1 box of Always Infiniti
2 5lb bags of Unbleached flour
2 Dole Juice
1 bag of Nestle Morsels
2 boxes of Velveeta shells and cheese
1 Miracle whip
2 Carnation Evaporated milk
4 Campbells Tomato soup
4 Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup
1 10 lb Butterball Fresh Turkey
1 pouch of Betty Crocker Cookie mix
1 jar of salsa
2 pineapples
1 4pk of cottonelle toilet paper

Total before coupons was $144.xx
Total Saved $73
Total OOP $71!!!

How did you do this week on groceries? Let me know in the comments below!

Coupon Organization Methods:Part 2 of 4

If you missed Part 1, click here

The File System- This system is very good for the person who has the least amount of time to spend cutting and organizing their coupons. Reason being, you only cut the coupons you need!

This method works well if you read blogs or websites which give a thorough matchup of the sales with what coupons you need and which inserts they came in. After reading these sites, you should, in theory, be able to go straight to your box and easily find the coupons you need and cut only those out and be done.

The only materials you need to make this system work for you is a file box or cabinet (even a bankers box would work fine) and several hanging exterior file folders. You will want to make sure that you have a temporary labeling system for each file that can be easily changed, a post-it note would work well or even just a piece of paper taped to the top of the file.

This method is great for someone who is just starting out couponing because you do not spend an insane amount of time clipping and organizing coupons that you don't know how to really use yet! It minimizes the mess of stray coupons floating around and keeps them pretty well organized.

The drawbacks are pretty obvious to this method too though. If you constantly rely on someone else to find the deals for you, you inhibit yourself from really learning how to shop the sales and use coupons. Not one person will be able to tell you what the target prices are for what you should be buying for your family in your current stage of life.

You might miss some really great coupons if you don't really look through the ads! Also, when you don't cut them out, you have a harder time remembering what coupons you have since you didn't "handle" them.

One last point is that almost all stores run unadvertised deals and you won't have your coupons with you. (I'm not saying that you need to take advantage of every deal that you can, but the chances of you going all the way back home for a coupon are slim compared to just running out to the car)

Coupon Organization Methods: Part 1 of 4

There are 4 types of Coupon Organization methods in which I am going to outline for you over the days ahead. There are probably a hundred ways to organize them, but these are the one's I've tried and can speak from experience about.

The Coupon Binder - This is basically a 3 ring binder (the zipper one's work best, in case they tip over) with baseball card holders inside. The initial cost for the supplies could be rather expensive, but if you look around or wait for the school year to begin, this shouldn't cost very much at all.

You will need to determine how many categories you will need, and buy the corresponding number of baseball card holders. If you would like to separate the different types of coupons you have, then you will need a set of dividers.

Once you have your binder, card holders and dividers, it's time to set it up. Begin by deciding how your want the flow of your binder to be. Do you want it laid out as your most frequented grocery store? Or do you want it alphabetical? Once you decide, it’s time to start loading your coupons into the card holders.

Some people use 1 slot for each coupon, or a different product on front and back and some people use the slots to hold similar items. The point of using this method is to be able to easily see what coupons you have and be able to quickly locate them.

A lot of times, the zippered binders have some really great compartments on the inside front panel. This area is great for storing the current grocery circulars, a pair of scissors, a pen, your shopping lists and any stores coupon policy you feel would be good to have on hand.

I have used this method, and I have used the binder method on a smaller scale as well (think day planner size).

*They worked great while I was using them, but if I slacked off any bit, my binder seemed out of control and full of expired coupons.

*This method worked quite well for someone like me who clips almost every coupon, but also became very bulky and heavy.

*I did not like was how massive it was to manipulate in the front seat of the grocery cart, I couldn't imagine trying to do that with a child up there too!

*My other problem with this method was that many of the coupons I get won't fit into those slots without having to be folded up so many times I couldn't tell what the coupon was for anymore.

*For other people this method works like a charm.

*They can see exactly what they have and all of the multiples of the same coupon are right there in the same pocket.

*If you can continually keep your binder organized, everything will stay right in its place and be easy to clean out any expired ones.

Overall, this method worked pretty well for me during the time that I used it often, kept it organized and actually put everything in the pockets!!

Stay tuned for the next installment of this series: The File System

Getting back into the swing of things

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

After many days off moving and unpacking, my vacation time is up and I'm back at work today. This will be the first "regular" day for us since moving into the house; I'm curious to see what time I make it home after stopping by the grocery store...

I'm super excited that there is a new Kroger opening up just down the street from us, but in the meantime I have to shop at the one near work to keep getting some of the great deals they have. I plan to start posting some of my grocery shopping trips again and squeeze in the Kroger deals for the week in too. (This probably will begin after the internet connection has been established at the house).

Here is a quick run-down of things I see worth mentioning:

$15 in Campbell's coupons

$16.70 in Pillsbury coupons

House update

Friday, November 13, 2009

We moved everything in and have unpacked lots of boxes, and I still have no idea where anything is! The whole move went really smoothly, and I have yet to find anything broken.

Today I will be finalizing everything with the utility companies to make sure they have been transferred into our name and going to the post office to get our mail box keys. Later today I hope to go grocery shopping, if I can find my coupon box... and then unpack some more.

We will be laying sod down in the backyard this weekend with some family and friends that offered to help, and if we are lucky, we will be purchasing a washer & dryer. We won't have internet at the house until a couple days before Thanksgiving, so trying to find a set we like will be a challenge in itself!

Hopefully, I will be able to squirrel away some free time over the weekend and go to Panera, Starbucks or Chick-fil-a and use their wifi to catch up on some things. We will just have to see..

The amount posts over the next few days will probably be lacking - but the sooner I can get my world back to a functional state, the sooner things here will be on their regular schedule again.

While I am gone, feel free to check out A Full Cup. It is a site that is mostly forums and the community there has tons of great information to share, deals posted, links to some new coupons and more. You will likely find deals that I don't post (for different reasons) as well.

Earn Extra Money

Would you like to earn a little extra money? One of the ways I earn extra money aside from my 8-5 job is by taking surveys and reading emails from Inbox Dollars.

They consistently send out emails and there are several surveys you can qualify for, and it just takes a few minutes a day to start earning!

When you sign up you will receive a $5 sign up bonus and the payment threshold is only $30, which you can reach fairly quickly if you stick with reading the emails (some of the emails will have a confirm reading link at the bottom, make sure you click that to be properly credited!)

You won't get rich by reading emails, but who ever complains about extra $ in your pocket? I know I don't!
